Sworn Translation of your Marriage Certificate

A marriage certificate carries your current civil status, marginal notes on divorce, separation or widowhood, the matrimonial property regime you're registered under, and any later annotations that change how Spanish or foreign authorities read your file today. All of it has to appear on the sworn translation, in the right place, or the receiving office will send it back.

I'm Rosa Sánchez Montoya, sworn translator and interpreter for English appointed by Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAEC Nº 3189). I translate marriage certificates in both directions: English into Spanish, or Spanish into English.

legal validity

Why your marriage certificate needs a sworn translation

Whichever authority reviews your file (a Spanish civil registry, Extranjería, a nationality caseworker, a foreign consulate, a pension office, a probate court) will only accept a translation signed and stamped by a translator officially appointed for the job.

In Spain that appointment comes from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. My signature, stamp and declaration of accuracy give the translation the legal validity the receiving office needs to act on your file.

marginal notes

Marginal notes matter: divorce, separation, widowhood and matrimonial regime

A marriage certificate is a living document, every civil status event gets added to the original entry as a marginal note (nota marginal), and those notes are usually what the receiving office is actually checking.

Divorce and separation

Has to appear on the translation for nationality, remarriage, family reunification or pension procedures.

Widowhood

The spouse's death is recorded on the marriage entry. That annotation is what pension offices and probate courts need to see translated

Matrimonial property regime

Community of property, separation of property or a specific pact affects how a couple buys, sells or inherits. If you're buying property in Spain as a foreign couple, the regime declared on your certificate matters.

Before requesting the certificate from your registry, ask for the updated version with all marginal notes included. Send it to me and I'll check anything missing before we start.

about me

Rosa Sánchez Montoya, sworn translator No. 3189

Over the years I've translated marriage certificates for couples registering a UK or Irish wedding here in Spain, British widows and widowers dealing with pensions and inheritance after losing a spouse on the Costa Blanca, mixed-nationality couples buying property jointly, and Spanish nationals applying for nationality after marrying a foreign partner.

Each of those files goes to a different authority, and each authority reads the same certificate looking for different details. That's what I already know when your document lands in my inbox.

when you need it

When you need an official translation of your degree

A degree and its transcript get pulled out for different reasons at different life stages. These are the four contexts I see most often at Tradusan.

Registering a foreign marriage in Spain

A wedding celebrated abroad needs to be inscribed in the Spanish Civil Registry to have effect here. The foreign certificate goes in with a sworn translation into Spanish.

Spanish nationality by marriage

Marriage to a Spanish national reduces the residence requirement for nationality to one year. The file includes a sworn translation of the foreign certificate, with marginal notes up to date.

Family reunification and joint residence

Bringing your spouse to Spain or applying jointly for residence requires the marriage certificate in Spanish. If it was issued abroad, it goes in with a sworn translation.

Widow's pension and inheritance as spouse

Claiming a Spanish widow's pension, handling probate here after losing a spouse, or dealing with inheritance abroad all require the marriage certificate with the death annotation, translated into the language of the receiving authority.

Divorce and dissolution proceedings

Opening a divorce case in a country different from where you married requires the marriage certificate translated into the language of the court.

the process

Get your marriage certificate translated

01

Send me the certificate

WhatsApp or email. A scan of the paper original or the certified digital version from the Civil Registry works as a source. Tell me which country and authority it's for, and whether the certificate needs to include marginal notes for that procedure.

02

Fixed quote and delivery date

I confirm price and turnaround before starting, and I flag anything that could delay acceptance: missing marginal notes, an outdated certificate, an apostille that isn't in place yet.

03

Signed and stamped translation in your inbox

Digital PDF with a valid electronic signature, ready to send or print. Paper copy on request.

Mixed-nationality couples, foreign residents who married abroad, widows and widowers handling pensions and inheritance: if that's you, I'm around the corner. Everything can be handled digitally, or you can drop by the office.

FAQs about the translation of marriage certificates

Do I need the certificate with marginal notes, or is the basic version enough?

For most procedures, yes. Ask your registry for the certificado literal actualizado, or the equivalent in the country where you married.

My marriage certificate is the EU multilingual form (Regulation 2016/1191). Do I still need a sworn translation?

Sometimes not. Within the EU it's valid for many procedures without translation. Outside the EU, or for nationality and some registry inscriptions, you'll still need one. Send it to me first and I'll say.

Can you work from the digital certificate I downloaded from the Civil Registry?

Yes. A certified digital certificate with its verification code is a valid source. A high-resolution scan of the paper original also works.

We married abroad years ago. Will you translate an older certificate?

Yes. Older UK, Irish and US certificates with handwritten entries are part of the normal workload.

Will the sworn translation be accepted for a widow's pension or inheritance procedure?

Yes. The MAEC signature and stamp (Nº 3189) are what Spanish Social Security, notaries, probate courts and foreign pension offices require.

How long does it take?

Usually 2 to 3 working days. On a tighter deadline, tell me when you send the document and I'll confirm.

Can we handle everything online?

Yes. Send the certificate by WhatsApp or email. Digital delivery with electronic signature. Paper copy on request.
