If you're exchanging a foreign driving licence at the DGT, dealing with an insurance claim after an accident, or presenting your licence to a Spanish court or employer, you'll be asked for a sworn translation before your file moves.

Why your driving licence needs a sworn translation
The DGT, Spanish insurance companies, courts and employers only accept translations signed and stamped by a translator officially appointed for the job.
My MAEC signature and stamp give yours legal validity in front of any of them. The translation covers both sides of the card: personal details, categories, dates, restrictions, endorsements and the issuing authority.

Please note that you must send me clear photos or scans of both sides of the card. A translation of the front alone will be returned by the receiving office.

Exchanging your licence at the DGT (canje)
Non-EU driving licences (British post-Brexit, American, Canadian, Australian, and others) go through a canje process at the Jefatura de Tráfico to become a Spanish licence. The DGT file includes a sworn translation of the foreign licence.
Insurance claims after an accident
Spanish insurance companies may ask for a sworn translation of a foreign licence when opening a claim, confirming coverage, or resolving a dispute after a collision.
Court proceedings involving driving
Traffic offences, serious infractions or civil proceedings after an accident require the foreign licence translated into Spanish for the court file.
Working as a professional driver
Delivery, transport, school or hire drivers presenting a foreign licence to a Spanish employer need a sworn translation of the categories and endorsements before being cleared to drive on the job.

FAQs about the sworn translation of your driving licence
I'm a UK resident. Can I still exchange my licence in Spain after Brexit?
Yes. The 2023 UK-Spain agreement allows the exchange without a Spanish driving test, and the sworn translation of the UK licence is one of the documents the DGT will ask for. I translate it; the canje appointment and paperwork are handled by you or your gestor.
I have an International Driving Permit (IDP). Do I still need a sworn translation?
For temporary driving in Spain, an IDP with Spanish covers you. For the DGT canje, an insurance claim, a court file or an employer, the IDP is not enough. You'll need a sworn translation of the original licence.
Do I need to send both sides of the licence?
Yes. The reverse holds the categories, restrictions and endorsements, and the receiving office checks that side as carefully as the front.
My US licence is from a specific state. Does that matter?
No. State licences are translated with the issuing authority and format kept faithful to the original. Send me photos of both sides and I'll handle it.
My licence is expired. Can you still translate it?
Yes, but check first whether the receiving office needs a valid one. For the DGT canje, the licence usually has to be valid or recently expired within a limited window.
How long does it take?
Usually 2 to 3 working days. On a tighter deadline, tell me when you send the photos and I'll confirm.
