notarial acts

Notarial acts where an English sworn interpreter can help

Spanish notaries can only record a bilingual signing as legally valid when the interpretation is done by someone appointed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
These are the notarial services most frequently requested by English-speaking clients on the Costa Blanca.

Property purchase or sale

I review the available draft beforehand and interpret the deed and the notary’s explanations at the signing, helping you understand the transaction and raise any questions.

Mortgage signing

Mortgage deeds contain technical terms, interest rates, repayment conditions and other important clauses. I interpret the notary’s explanations and your questions accurately.

Power of attorney (poder notarial)

I interpret the powers you are granting, who will be authorised to act on your behalf and any limits set out in the document.

Wills and acceptance of inheritance

I interpret the wording of wills and inheritance documents, helping you follow the notary’s explanations and ask questions before signing.

Notarised statements and declarations

Interpreting for statements, acknowledgements, consents and other declarations made before a Spanish notary.

Not sure if your appointment needs a sworn interpreter?

qualified support

Why choose a qualified sworn interpreter?

Sworn translation of a written document and interpreting at a notarial appointment are different services. My appointment covers both English–Spanish sworn translation and interpreting.

A sworn interpreter is not legally required for every notarial appointment. The notary will confirm the language arrangements and any requirements for the interpreter in your case.

Choosing a qualified professional gives you specialist language support, careful preparation and accurate interpreting of legal terminology. Interpreting does not replace legal advice or guarantee that a deed cannot be challenged.

the process

What I do as Sworn Interpreter

01

Preparation

I review the deed or other documents available before the appointment and prepare the terminology. Sending the draft when you book helps me prepare thoroughly.

02

Live interpretation

I interpret the notary’s explanations and your questions and answers, helping everyone communicate clearly before you sign.

03

Official record

Where required, I sign the notarial instrument as the interpreter. The notary determines the formalities for the appointment.

Frequently asked questions

Do I really need a sworn interpreter, or is any bilingual translator enough for a notary?

Not always. Under the Spanish Notarial Regulations, the notary may communicate the document’s content directly if they know the language; otherwise, an interpreter designated by the person concerned may be needed. Ask the notary to confirm the requirements. A sworn interpreter offers professional preparation and specialist legal terminology.

How much notice do you need before the appointment?

Please contact me at least 48 hours in advance whenever possible, so I can review the documents and confirm availability. I may also be able to accommodate last-minute requests.

Can you interpret by video call instead of in person?

I can interpret preparatory meetings by video call. For a notarial signing, remote participation depends on the type of act, the applicable procedure and the notary’s arrangements. Please check with the notary before booking.

Do you also translate the documents I need to bring to the appointment?

Yes. My appointment covers sworn translation between English and Spanish, including birth certificates, powers of attorney, criminal record certificates and other documents required for your appointment.
